Extract from Chapter 6 (Five Pages) |
No one knew, these days, how much C.C.T.V. was still around. It was supposed to be turned off and no energy was allocated for it, but they hadn't spoken to anyone who believed this. |
Satellite surveillance was another matter. Most of the commercial satellites had been damaged too badly in the meteorite shower a few years before to let them work properly. It would take far too much energy to put up any new ones. |
Kirk's mum and dad thought that the government had bought satellite space for surveillance from countries whose satellites were still functioning. It seemed ridiculous to Kirk, when there was so much other stuff needed attention first. At least the old communications satellites were still working. They had been on lower orbits. |
Maria and Kirk both carried old cork bottle stoppers, which they had singed in a fire, to blacken their faces. They tried to stay in the darkest parts of the streets, but some of the back streets had so much food growing in them, there was only just space for a pathway through. |
